About the Author

Mark L. Knapp is the Jesse H. Jones Centennial Professor Emeritus and a Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin. He was the editor of Human Communication Research (1980-83); an Eastern Communication Association Scholar (1982-83); an ICA Fellow (1980); and an NCA Distinguished Scholar. The Mark L. Knapp Award for career contributions to the study of interpersonal communication is awarded annually by the National Communication Association. He received teaching awards from two professional associations and four different universities. He was the President of ICA (1975-76); NCA (1989-90); the Association for Communication Administrators (1996-97); and the University of Texas chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society (2001-03). He chaired the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Texas from 1989-1996 and 2000-2001. Amazing book!!!! Very informative and an interesting read for personal use.

The book was the correct book, however, it came in very poor condition. After I returned it I was charged the fu; price of the book stating it was returned in poor condition.

I have the paperback version of this excellent book, and wanted to be able to have it available as a reference during my travels. Much to my disappointment, this is not a Kindle book per se; instead, it is more like a PDF file. You cannot adjust the font (either style or size). You cannot highlight sections of the text. In sum, you cannot interact with this book the way you can with "true" Kindle books.I wish I could offer two separate ratings: one for content and one for format. If I could, I would give it a five-star rating for the former and a one-star rating for the latter. Since I don't have the option, I've opted for the middle of the road three-star rating.This format issue should be clearly noted on the Amazon page featuring this book.

I've come to find that Duguid has releases many commentaries. This was my introductory commentary into his many. I was pleased. I used it for a college Biblical exegesis, and I found that I agreed with Duguid's findings more than any of the other sources or commentaries I used.I would highly recommend it for any pastor who plans on spending time in a book of Esther, or a Bible student who needs to exegete for a class. I'm sure I'll find myself buying more of Duguid's commentaries in the future.Just an FYI: Duguid's notes and commentary read more like a sermon manuscript than most commentaries. This may make the more researching-styled students read little more to get the notes he or she needs, but it doesn't hinder from the true expertise and well-researched notes that Duguid makes. While Duguid does keep his notes on a certain passage of a text down to a minimum, he isn't like most commentators who style their commentary very easily as in, "Verses 1 -3; Commentary.".

I love to teach the books of Esther and Ruth. They are fast paced, full of surprises, lots of intrigue and even a good dose of romance (Ruth specifically). I have so many commentaries on these two books and have my outlines already done and prepared for whenever any group wants to study the books.Soooo, why did I buy another book on Esther and Ruth? That's easy, our senior Pastor is preaching through Esther this summer. He purchased some commentaries on Esther and just to make shipping costs reasonable he had the warehouse throw in this copy of Esther by Iain Duguid. He told me this was the greatest surprise of his life.He said this book was worth the price of all the others combined. Well, it got my attention because I have never even heard of Iain Duguid.I previewed the other Pastor's copy and was hooked from the opening chapter. I had to have my own copy. I ordered it and impatiently waited for it to arrive. I devoured the book as soon as I got it. I'm now and Iain Duguid fan.He took a subject that I am familiar with and gave me new insights, new provoking thoughts to consider and shook some of my beliefs about the books to their roots. I will now be looking over my lesson plans and readdressing some areas, shoring up some thoughts and making huge improvements.Thank you Iain for a very well done commentary. I enjoyed it so much I eagerly ordered Iain's commentary on Daniel.If you are going to do a serious study of Esther or Ruth this book IS A MUST!Enjoy!

I am currently doing a study on Ruth and was looking for a commentary that was more of a theological approach. This is it. It is in depth and very detailed. I have not ventured into Esther yet but this author is great. He has other commentaries as well and I plan to add them all to my collection.

Iain Duguid is one of my favorite authors. His understanding of the Old Testament, coupled with his ability articulate it in such an accessible manner, makes his books a pleasure to read. He also is masterful at drawing implications for believers today from Old Testament passages. His writings on Ruth and Esther have added a new dimension to my understanding of the Old Testament, of these two women, and of Jesus' work among His people both then and now.

Iain Duguid is a fantastic biblical commentator. This volume on Esther and Ruth is easy to read and fully Christ-centered.

I love reading this commentary. It is challenging and yet written with humor. Seeing the irony of the situation of the Book of Esther catches one off guard, while at the same time the author makes application of biblical principles to the lives of believers today. I will enjoy having it as a resource for our bible study.

The exposition is very simple and easy to understand, also beautyful pointing to Jesus, the goal of every book in the bible.

Mr Duguid makes some very good practical applications of these ancient books of the Bible for modern day Christians. I personally feel, however, that he takes too much liberty in the text and asserts the thoughts and motives of the characters in the stories (Esther, King Ahaseuras, Naomi, Ruth) as fact, where I feel they can only be guessed at. I would be much move likely to read another book in this series by a different author.

I have purchased this book three times as a professional geologist and mineral collector because I've destroyed them in the field. It has great descriptions and better information than other books such as the National Audubon Society Field Guide to Rocks and Minerals. I do enjoy the plates although I would like to see more examples of the minerals, however, that being said, its a bit of a pipe dream to have all the examples of the minerals, its simply an impossibility. As a mineralogy field guide its a great resource to be able to know what tests to perform to prove you have one mineral over another, and the way the book classifies the minerals by constituent also assists, however, Its not always the most obvious in how to narrow down different mineral types. You must have a rudimentary understanding of your minerals before you can use this book to any extent, and if you want to use it to its full extent, you better make your own book and know how to do all of the tests. As a field geologist, I've had to use the most rudimentary field supplies to determine mineralogies and this book helps, but be sure you read, read, and read to be sure you know what you are looking at and doing. Its a fantastic resource, but do not make it your only one.

I chose 4 stars because while I really liked this book and it helped me immensely in my minerology course, I did NOT like that all the pictures of the minerals were condensed into a section of colored pages in the middle of the book. The information on the minerals was superb, and I think for a seasoned geologist who knows their minerals by heart would appreciate this book, but for someone who's still learning what each mineral looks like and wants to know some common physical properties of minerals, this was a little bit inconvenient. I have to say I LOVED that there's a section on crystallography at the beginning of the book. Definitely buy it if you need information on minerals' occurences, properties, crystal structure, and how to test them. Do NOT buy it if you're a hobbyist who wants to easily find what a mineral looks like and identify minerals strictly by their physical properties.

As a geology student studying mineral identification I looked long and hard at every R&M book I could find and came to the conclusion the 4th edition of this work is the best. Why not the 5th? While it has better photographs for the most part it's not cross referenced. So if you look up Actinolite and go to the plate with the image it has no reference to the text about the mineral! the 4th DOES! Sounds small but if your doing a lot of work the page flipping gets tiresome and it was such an easy thing to do....Also the section on rocks is weaker in the 5th.Also as mentioned in other reviews the binding is subpar and not worthy of a Field Manual. Cheap paperback with poor type set as compared with the 4th. Just harder to read. The 4th has the classic field manual feel to it and one has confidence it wont self destruct in a ruck sack on a collecting trip.The color photos are a slight improvement but don't suffice for sharp detail and please note color is a poor indicator of minerals. Sure a great color image would be wonderful but a B&W that highlights the important detail will serve us better.Much of the Pough text seems in tact and is the lone saving grace! the descriptions are a great help to my understanding and far and away the best out there.I know these sound like minor complaints but I nail with one star to hopefully rattle the publishers cage and print a new permanent edition worthy of Dr. Pough's effort. I found a similar recent Peterson Guide to medicinal plants that have nice sewn flex binding for $2 more than the R&M book! The current Bird guide has the classic type set. I even called the publisher to see if they published a "field guide" version as opposed to this paperback and was met in a joking manner that was of no help.So c'mon! Amazon is one of the best places to get messages across when publishers laugh in our faces! This work is too important to let cheap publishers do a half effort job on.And go buy a mint copy of the 4th used for $5!

Dated no color photos, not useful

Pro: More technical in scope and more detailed information on mineral properties than most fields guides.Con: Not quite as useful for visual mineral identification such as the Audubon guide.Great reference; better for more experienced collectors.

I use this for my geochemistry/mineralogy class. The descriptions of minerals are very in-depth and good for those who understand what it's describing, but not so good for the layman. The color plates are quite nice. For the layman, I'd recommend the Golden Guide to Rocks and Minerals, as it has more images of the minerals in question. I'm also disappointed at the complete dearth of rock entries in this field guide. As one is most likely to encounter rocks as opposed to standalone minerals in the field, a guide with a greater focus on rocks would have been a great addition. I'm also disappointed that this guide does not go into detail on mineral lattice structures.

Well written and informative. A great book for all levels of interest in minerals. Highly recommend it.

Love this book for myself. Refer to it on a regular basis.
